Next, think of the furniture and other objects that you want to have in this room. See if they fit before you buy them. Here, again, help from an architect could be useful.

Now we will see what kind of work needs to be done and which professionals you may need to seek help from for each type of work.

What will guarantee creating a perfect bedroom?

Electric wiring and lights. Make sure electrical sockets are installed in the needed placed and all planned lights are working properly.

Natural light. The room should receive at least two hours of sunshine a day. If the main window is well-positioned, it will ensure enough natural light and proper ventilation!

TV installation. When you plan a TV spot, do not forget that you will need to connect a TV antenna and an outlet. Choose whether the antenna wiring will be concealed in the wall or not. Do you need to create a panel on the wall to hide the wires or you will leave them hanging?

Sockets and switches. Pay attention to where the sockets and switches are located. Make sure your bed or cabinets will not be in front of an outlet or switch. This should be taken into account when choosing and placing your furniture. If you plan to install new outlets, place them on both sides of the bed, for example. This will help to connect a reading lamp. Do not place the sockets behind the bedhead or cabinets. You will lose extra space and it will look awkward!

Lighting. One of the most used solutions is to have the main light as a spot in the center of the ceiling. This is not the best idea, though. If you can do this, install an indirect light fixture. Chose the one that bounces the light onto the ceiling. This choice of lighting increases comfort, as it prevents direct light onto the bed.

Planning extra light in the room. If you would like to put other fixtures on the ceiling or walls, remember to create electric connection points during the renovation work. If you plan additional lighting in the room, you can leave the central lighting spot on the ceiling unused. There is no problem with this.

Lights, integrated into the mirror. If you have a mirror with lights in it or lights nearby, make sure you use yellow color lamps, especially if this mirror will be used for makeup. A yellow light will ensure the right correspondence of colors and color transition.

Warm color on the walls. Fresh paint visually renovates the room and does not cost that much! Neutral, soft tones, such as gray and beige, help with rest.

You can also decide to use wallpaper. This will ensure that the final result is very clean, but you may not like the smell of the glue. Just plan not t sleep in this room on the day when you apply the new wallpaper.

Wardrobes. Keep in mind that using sliding doors in wardrobes helps save space. At the same time, sliding doors need their space to be able to slide to the side. Plan accordingly.

Wardrobe height. Measure the floor-to-ceiling height of your room and opt for wardrobes that go up to the ceiling. This way you take better advantage of the space. This design also makes it easier to clean the room, so it does not get too dusty.

Selecting the best floor. Virtually any type of floor could suit well in the bedroom. It all depends on your choice. Carpet, laminate, vinyl, ceramic or porcelain tiles are the most commonly used.

How to make sure that your bedroom is not too small?

The answer is simple – measure, measure and measure again to ensure that the room has sufficient space.

Bed Size. Over the years the sleeping rooms are becoming smaller, while beds and mattresses are becoming larger. Here are the most used sizes:

Bed/mattress sizein cmin inch
Simple double bed138×188 cm54,33×74,01 inch
Queen Size bed158×198 cm62,20×77,95 inch
King Size bed185×198 cm72,83×77,95 inch

Mattress height. Foam-filled mattresses can range from 12 to 25 cm thick, depending on the density. Spring mattresses are usually between 20 and 40 centimeters. Make sure you add the height of the bed box the hights of the mattress before you by your set. Make sure the sum is not too high for you to use. If you go for a foam mattress, chose a firm one, which will hold your body straight. Refer to special tables that would recommend the right mattress depending on your weight and height.

Furniture measures. Know measures of all furniture: chest of drawers, dressing table, bed, shoe rack, bedside table, wardrobe, mirrors, etc. Plan well for them to make the most of the space. Do not forget to leave a bit of space between the sides of the bed and the walls on both sides to be able to move. The recommended minimum is 60 cm on each side and at the bottom of the bed.

Head of the bed. It also takes up space! Bedheads made from MDF panels have a minimum thickness of 2cm. Other bed heads that may be sold with the bed may be up to 5-8 cm thick. Consider this measure as well.

Wardrobe. Typical wardrobes are usually 60 to 65 cm deep. Make sure there is room for a wardrobe. If there is not much room for opening the doors, it makes sense to install a wardrobe with sliding doors.

Bathroom. If you plan or have a bathroom next to your bedroom, take into account that another opening door (to the bathroom) will take extra space from placing the furniture. Plan bathroom door and the layout accordingly.

Assembling furniture. See if the store you purchase furniture from has a furniture assembly service. If you have to assemble yourself, see if you have the right tools. See there are clear instructions included with your delivery and you can do it is best to call an assembler. When you receive furniture, make sure all parts are delivered and that there are no defects.

What not to do when renovating your bedroom

  • Break or tear down walls without checking if they are structural walls or have pillars in them.
  • Buy any furniture before checking the dimensions of the room and planning accordingly.
  • Start the work without knowing for sure what you are going to do.
  • Change your mind during work.
  • Not test the electrical installations and not know where are the sockets and switches.
  • Not check the conditions of the floor, walls, and ceiling.

Which professionals to hire to help out

You will need different professionals to help with each piece of renovation work, such as flooring, painting, electricity or lighting. One all-in-one master will usually not do the quality work for you. For furniture assembly, stores usually provide furniture assembly services. Ask them when you buy. If they do not have their own service, they may be able to recommend one. You are not the first to ask.

If you choose to create your own furniture, ask for recommendations for a good carpenter. It is common to have a need for a touch-up in painting after installing the furniture. See you can combine this furniture assembly and installation work with painting.

Of course, if you can, hire an architect to plan and manage this renovation project. Generally, you will have professional advice and will avoid many pitfalls, so the money you spend and the risk of mistakes decrease dramatically.
